Sanyo M9800

Sanyo M9800

Another classically styled somewhat drab Sanyo product.  It’s the Sanyo M9800. It’s a nice basic box with average features including AM, FM, single cassette, tone control knob, function and mode switches, LED FM stereo indicator, Pause control  etc.  Not real exciting but still a good representation of boomboxes of that era.

The M9800 measures 17″ X 10″ X 5″ and weighs about 7.5 pounds.  This one comes in an M9800 box but is actually labelled M9820 on the back of the unit. I don’t think there is any real difference. It runs on six D cell batteries or an affixed power cable that is contained in its own compartment.

These boomboxes aren’t in real high demand but they do have a market. In good working and cosmetic condition they will sell for $30.00 to $100.00.

  1. I had the Sanyo M9800 from 1987 to 1990 and loved it so much that I sought another one on ebay in 2021. Nothing flash, but lovely and clean. Brings back many memories playing Steely Dan and The Oitfield on this unit.

  2. I had a 9800 back in the mid/late 80’s back in jr.high. I kept it inside the middle of my waterbeds headboard area. Almost every night I’d plug in my headphones and listen to music for hours before falling asleep. KMET KNAC KROQ KUCI.

This boombox played a significant role in my life. And it sounded really good. Worked perfect for many years.
