General Sound Dance Machine GS-4040 is quite a machine. Colored lights, a strobe light and wild dance club colors make it one of a kind. It is a dual cassette, 3 band boombox.

I just bought a General Sound GS-4040 from eBay and it is a very interesting boombox to say the least. I also have the other General Sound model with the rotating mirror ball on top and with LEDs surrounding the speakers that Max mentioned above, the GS-2525. The GS-2525 is actually a little larger than the GS-4040 and much heavier. They look like they use the same plastic body/case when looking at online photos of the two boomboxes but they are not the same at all. They are shaped similarly but the GS-2525 is noticeably larger when compared side by side to the GS-4040.
The GS-2525 also has larger speakers with 5.25 inch woofers and 2 inch tweeters while the GS-4040 has 4 inch woofers and 1.25 inch tweeters. The GS-2525 also has the rear facing speaker that is 3 inches in diameter and is connected with plastic ducts to the rectangular ports on the front of the main body along the base while the GS-4040 does not have a rear facing speaker at all. The GS-4040 has the grille for that speaker on the back but there is no speaker behind it and no ducts. It also looks like it has the same rectangular ports along the base in front but if you look at them closely, unlike with the GS-2525, they are actually completely blocked off and have no purpose.
I just thought that I would mention that there are other major differences between these two General Sound boomboxes. When I was looking to buy them and I looked at online photos of them both I always thought that they were the same basic boombox but just with different lighting systems in them. After finally adding them to my boombox collection and actually comparing them side by side over the past few days, I have found out that they are actually quite different.
I have the model that came out right after this one…very unique, and very rare. Revolving disco ball with 2 contrasting-colored spotlights, 2 built-in strobe lights, flashing club lights, and mulit-colored LED’s around the speaker grills…all lights flash and move to the music and there are even program controls for the light patterns. Truly special. From 1984.

Good luck to anyone that is interested in buying these unusual mirror ball boomboxes. I finally have both of them in my collection but I had to look online for about three years before finding a GS-4040 in good condition. I found my GS-2525 after searching online for about a year and a half. If you’re patient enough like I was, you just might get lucky.
