Pioneer didn't really make too many boomboxes but one of their mid size offerings was the Pioneer SK-31.  It's a nice looking little single cassette boombox that was introduced around 1979. It made a brief appearance in the last scene of the movie Christine.  It's a good sounding box but most feel it's better when run through external speakers.

There was also a smaller version called the Pioneer SK-21 that looked nearly exactly the same except that it had only one meter as opposed to two.  These mid sized boomboxes are moderately popular and the SK-31 sells for over $150.00 in very good working condition.

This Sony CFS-9000 is at the later end of the vintage scale but is still a neat boombox.  It is a component design with detachable speakers as well as handle. Anybody familiar with these Sony's knows that their APM speakers put out a lot of clean sound for their size.  In fact the box isn't very big and it only weighs roughly 19 pounds.  Here are its features:

Most of the Sony CFS-9000's have a 7 at the top left corner of the main unit. It represents the 7 bands that the box has.  It also came with a carrying case and strap that you don't see too often.

Ok, so there's not much Boom in this box, but you have to admit this Sony CFM-104 has an intriguing design.  I'm not sure how loud that single speaker can get but the handle on one end sure would make it easy to carry.  Its features include:

• Rugged, splash-resistant design
• AM/FM tuner
• Cassette player/recorder
• Built-in microphone
• Auto shutoff (record and play)

The case is splash resistant (whatever that means) and made of high impact plastic. It also has rubber bushings and gaskets as well as waterproof seals. So, you can basically take it anywhere and not worry about destroying it.  You can record from the AM/FM radio or from a mic too.

While the boombox purists aren't going to like this little box from the early 90's I think it still has its place and with its unique and utilitarian design makes for a highly useable boombox. And, hey, they sell for about $50.00.

I've posted about the Panasonic SG-J555 before so I thought I'd mention the Panasonic SG-J500 here.  The SG-J500 was produced in 1984 and, like the SG-J555, featured an expandable tray with a turntable.  You just push the button on the front and out pops the turntable. The box was also branded as National.  The main difference between the SG-J500 and the SG-J555 is that the SG-J555 has what Panasonic called "Ambience" which is essentially a sound expander. The SG-J555 also had some minor aesthetic changes but really both units are very similar.  The turntable can run at both 33 and 45 speeds. It also came with an optional car adapter cable, part Panasonic RP-952, that allowed you to power the unit through your cars cigarette lighter.

The unit was powered by either 100 AC or D cell batteries.  It weighs approximately 11 pounds and measures 15.5 x 10.5 x 8.5 inches.  Obviously it's a little deeper then most boomboxes because of the turntable.

The Panasonic SG-J500 is a pretty popular boombox. Not just among collectors but also among retro fanatics that want a unique conversation piece. The retractable turntable gives them just that. These boxes will sell anywhere from $80.00 in below average condition all the way up to $250.00 in mint working condition.

Another fairly non-descript yet popular General Electric boombox - the GE 3-5286A.  It does have some clean styling and interesting tweeter grills.  It also has nice LED meter lights.  It's a single cassette box with 5 inch woofers and 2 inch tweeters. It also has the nice strap brackets for carrying it around. It was introduced around 1982 and retailed for just under $300.00.

It's a decent sized box with dimensions of 19 x 11 x 5.5. It also features:

• 12 or 220, 12 v DC or 8 D cell batteries
• External speaker and headphone jacks
• AUX IN
• Mic jacks
• 2-way speaker system
• Dolby Noise Reduction
• Telescoping antenna

The GE 3-5286A is a fairly popular box and sells well. One recently sold in very clean working condition for $275.00.
